Our eye exams are tailored to thoroughly and carefully assess your vision and eye health. Whether your vision has changed or you're here for your annual eye exam, our staff will help you see clearly and maintain your eye health.
We offer routine and medical eye exams to patients of all ages, utilizing the most advanced technology to maximize accuracy with minimal discomfort. Our goal is to protect your eyesight while ensuring your experience is comfortable and informative.
What Is a Comprehensive Eye Exam?
A comprehensive eye exam at Owen Eye Care is more than just a typical vision test. It's a thorough evaluation of your eye health and function. These exams are crucial for diagnosing vision problems, tracking the progression of eye diseases, and detecting early signs of illness before symptoms appear.
Our experienced optometrists will:
- Check your visual acuity to determine if you require glasses or contact lenses.
- Assess refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
- Measure intraocular pressure to screen for glaucoma.
- Evaluate your eye alignment and movement, as these factors affect reading ability and depth perception.
- Test color vision and contrast sensitivity, which is especially important for children and patients with certain medical conditions.
- Examine the retina and optic nerve, often using our advanced Optos retinal cameras.
- Screen for early signs of systemic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
Why Eye Exams Are Important—Even with 20/20 Vision
It's a common misconception that clear vision equals healthy eyes. The truth is that many serious eye conditions—such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy—can develop without any noticeable symptoms in their early stages, slowly damaging your eyesight. Early detection through regular eye exams is the key to preserving your vision for the future.
Eye exams can also help identify other health conditions in the body. Certain autoimmune disorders, diabetes, and hypertension can show their first signs in the eyes. At Owen Eye Care, we take a proactive approach to your overall health by carefully examining these early indicators of potential issues.
Technology That Enhances Accuracy and Comfort
At Owen Eye Care, we invest in the latest optometric technology to make your exam as efficient, accurate, and non-invasive as possible. Our Optos Retinal Camera enables us to capture a full, wide-angle image of the back of your eye, often without the need for dilation drops.
This means less sensitivity to light, no post-exam blurred vision, and a shorter appointment—ideal for patients with busy lifestyles or sensitivity to dilation.
Our technology assists us:
- Monitoring the retina for signs of disease.
- Tracking how the shape of your eyes changes over time.
- Minimizing discomfort during your visit.
Medical Eye Exams: Diagnosing and Managing Eye Conditions
If you are experiencing eye pain, blurred vision, floaters, flashes of light, or a sudden change in your eyesight, you may need a medical eye exam. These exams are designed to diagnose and treat specific eye conditions, including:
- Cataracts
- Glaucoma
- Macular degeneration
- Diabetic eye disease
- Dry eye syndrome
- Eye infections or trauma
Depending on your needs, we also provide referrals to trusted local specialists, coordinate surgical care, and offer ongoing management and education to help you protect your vision.
Eye Exams for Children and Teens
Early vision problems can impact a child's learning, attention, and overall development. We recommend regular eye examinations for all children, especially after they start school. Our team is wonderful with children and uses age-appropriate techniques to assess vision development and eye health.
For teenagers, we also screen for digital eye strain resulting from increased screen time and recommend strategies for protecting their vision.
Vision Exams for Adults and Seniors
Adults should have their eyes checked at least every 1–2 years, depending on age, health history, and risk factors. Our adult eye exams include:
- Prescription check for glasses or contact lenses
- Evaluation for digital eye stress, headache, or fatigue
- Screening for early signs of chronic conditions like glaucoma, cataract, and macular degeneration
For seniors, regular eye exams are crucial for preserving independence and quality of life. The aging eye is more vulnerable to disease, and our team provides both preventive care and ongoing management. We also educate patients about surgical options, fall risks related to poor vision, and age-appropriate eyewear solutions.
Contact Lens Exams and Fitting
If you are interested in contact lenses, we provide a comprehensive contact lens exam to find the perfect fit for your eyes, vision needs, and lifestyle. Not all eyes are compatible with all types of lenses, so we take the time to evaluate:
- Corneal curvature
- Tear film quality and quantity
- Pupil shape and eyelid anatomy
- History of dry eye, allergy, or lens discomfort
Depending on our findings, we fit patients with:
- Soft disposable lenses
- Toric lenses for astigmatism
- Multifocal contacts for presbyopia
- Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses
- Scleral and specialty lenses for conditions like keratoconus

Preparation for Your Eye Exam: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Being well-prepared helps your eye doctor make the most accurate evaluation possible. Here is a quick checklist of what to bring to your appointment:
- Current Glasses or Contact Lenses: Bring all current eyewear so your doctor can assess your existing prescription.
- List of Symptoms or Medications: Note any changes in vision, eye strain, or headaches. Additionally, please bring a list of your current medications, as some may impact your eye health.
- Insurance Card: If you plan to use medical or vision insurance, please bring your insurance card to ensure your coverage is applied correctly.
- Family Medical History: Since conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration can be hereditary, providing your family history helps your doctor assess your risk.
- Work and Lifestyle Habits: Inform your doctor about your typical daily activities, including screen time and hobbies, as these can affect your vision.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Upon arrival, our friendly staff will greet you, assist with the paperwork, and guide you through every step of the process. We make it a priority to explain each test and welcome your questions.
You'll leave your exam with a clear understanding of your eye health and your options for glasses or contact lenses. Our opticians will help you select the ideal frames and lenses for your lifestyle, vision needs, and budget.
Follow-Up Care: What Happens Next After Your Eye Exam
Your eye test doesn't end once you leave the test room. Eyes of the Bay is just as committed to follow-up as to the test itself. It allows you to find out your results, receive the proper treatment or corrective vision, and confirm your ongoing care. What you can look forward to seeing below following your appointment:
- Understanding Your Results
After your exam, one of our experts will sit with you to explain your results in clear, simple words. You will learn about your visual acuity, eye pressure, and the overall health of your eyes. If any condition is detected, such as dry eye, glaucoma, or early signs of cataract, it will be explained well. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have about your vision or symptoms. - Glasses or Contact Lenses
If you're a new wearer of corrective lenses or it's your first script, we'll walk you through it.
For glasses, you'll receive your new script and be fitted with frames here in our office or at your preferred store. For contact lenses, a second fitting visit may be necessary to ensure the lenses fit well and provide the correct correction. Once confirmed, we'll provide your prescription and review the proper care for your lenses. - When to Schedule Your Next Exam
If your prescription has changed or if you are new to corrective lenses, we will guide you through the next steps to ensure a seamless experience. For glasses, you will receive your updated prescription and select a frame either in our office or at a retailer of your choice. For contact lenses, a separate fitting appointment can be scheduled to ensure that the lenses are comfortable and provide the correct improvement. Once confirmed, we will provide your prescription and guide you on how to take care of your lenses. - New Symptoms
Vision can shift suddenly, and new symptoms should not be dismissed. Sudden attack symptoms, such as blurred vision, eye pain, flashes of light, or floaters, require an emergent visit to our office. Early treatment can prevent minor problems from escalating into major issues. Follow-up after your eye examination enables you to maximize the benefits from your treatment.
Insurance and Payment Options
We accept most major medical and vision insurance plans, including VSP, EyeMed, Aetna, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare, and many others. Our team is happy to answer questions about your coverage or help verify your benefits.
We also accept Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA/HSA) and CareCredit. We believe everyone deserves access to quality eye care and can discuss payment options if needed.
